The best sports bra depends on two things: how hard you move and how you size. Based on brand specs and what owners commonly report, here are three places to start.

For high-impact running and HIIT with a hook closure and adjustable straps, the Nike Indy High Support lists at about $55. If you have a larger bust and want cup-based sizing, the Brooks Dare Underwire is listed in C to G cups, about $75. For yoga, Pilates and low-impact days, the Girlfriend Collective Harriet is a softer longline pick at about $68.

This hub compares 11 bras so you can see support level, sizing system, padding and closure side by side. If you want a shortcut, the sports bra finder quiz matches you by impact level and size. Prices are list prices and often move during sales.

How to choose a sports bra

Bras are the most fit-sensitive piece of activewear, so it pays to decide a few things up front. Our sports bra fit guide covers measuring and the band test in detail.

Impact level comes first

Brands label support as low, medium or high. Low suits yoga, walking and lounging. Medium fits cycling, hiking-style workouts and studio classes. High is for running, jumping and HIIT. In this set, the Nike Indy, Brooks Dare, Panache Power, Gymshark Running and Gymshark High Support V-Neck are listed as high support. When in doubt, buy for your highest-impact activity.

Sizing system: alpha or cup-based

Most bras here use alpha sizes (XS to XL and up). Alpha sizing is easy, but it leaves one fit for many bust sizes. Cup-and-band sizing is more precise: the Brooks Dare lists 32C to 44F, and the Panache Power Wired lists DD and above. Athleta splits its Ultimate bra into A to C and D to DD+ versions, which is a middle path. If you have a larger bust, see the best sports bras for a large bust. If you have a smaller bust, see the small-bust list.

Compression or encapsulation

Compression bras press the chest against the body. They are simple and comfortable for small to medium busts. Encapsulation bras shape and support each breast separately, often with wires or molded cups, and many people with a larger bust prefer them for high-impact runs. The Brooks Dare and Panache are underwire designs; most others here are pullover compression styles. Neither type is "better". It depends on your size and activity.

Closures, straps and padding

Pullover bras are easy to wear but harder to get on when sweaty. Hook closures and adjustable straps, as on the Nike Indy, let you fine-tune the fit. Padding can be fixed, removable or absent. Removable padding gives you the choice, while fixed padding keeps the shape consistent. Longline styles, like the Lululemon Energy Longline, add a wider band that some people find steadier and more comfortable.

Style and price

Style options include racerback, crossback, scoop and longline. The set spans about $49 (Athleta Ultimate A to C) to $88 (Alo Airlift Suit Up). Extended alpha sizing goes up to 6XL at Girlfriend Collective. See the best sports bras for our top picks overall.

Pick by activity

Quick matches by activity

These pairings come from the brands' own descriptions and tags, not from wear-testing.

  • Running and HIIT: the Nike Indy, Gymshark pair, Brooks Dare and Panache Power carry high-support labels. The Athleta Ultimate is medium support but is tagged for running, HIIT and cycling.
  • Yoga, Pilates and lounging: the Harriet is low support. The Alo Airlift Suit Up and Lululemon Energy Longline are medium support and tagged for studio and everyday wear.
  • Wide size range: the Girlfriend Collective Dylan Tank and Harriet list XXS to 6XL, and Athleta's D to DD+ version goes to 3X, with hook-and-eye closure on the 1X to 3X sizes.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is buying medium support for a high-impact sport because the bra looks supportive. Check the support label, not the strap width.

The second is ignoring the band. In most fit guides the band does most of the work, and a loose band means the straps carry the load, which can dig in. If you size by cup, remember that band and cup sizes are linked, so changing one often means changing the other.

Third, do not skip the return policy. Fit is personal, and some brands treat certain items as final sale. See our return policies guide, and follow the care label when you wash, as how to wash activewear explains.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right support level?

Match support to your highest-impact activity. Low support suits yoga and walking, medium suits cycling and classes, and high support suits running and jumping. If you do mixed workouts, buy the higher level. You can wear a high-support bra for yoga, but a low-support bra for running is likely to feel uncomfortable.

Should I get alpha sizes or cup sizes?

Alpha sizes (S, M, L) are quick and work well for many small to medium busts. If alpha sizes never fit quite right, or you need more support, cup-and-band sizing gives a more precise fit. Brooks and Panache in this set list cup-based sizes. Check each brand's size chart, because systems are not interchangeable.

Are compression bras or encapsulation bras better for running?

Neither wins across the board. Compression bras are simple and often comfortable for smaller busts. Encapsulation bras separate and shape each side, and many people with larger busts prefer them for running. If you are unsure, read size-specific owner reviews and use the finder quiz to narrow your options.

How do I know my sports bra fits?

The band should sit snug and level without riding up, and the straps should not dig in. The cups or fabric should contain you with no spilling or gaping. Try jumping or jogging in place at home. If it passes, keep it. If not, check the return window first, since policies differ.

How much should I spend on a sports bra?

In this set, bras list for roughly $49 to $88. Higher price does not guarantee a better fit, but underwire and cup-sized bras often cost more because the construction is more complex. Look for sales, and compare the return policy, as fit is personal and exchanges are common.
