The Best Men's Running Shorts

The best men's running shorts are light, stay put when you move and carry your phone without bouncing. Our top pick is the Ten Thousand Session Short 5": a featherweight, lined short with a zip phone pocket, split hems and a perforated waistband, at $98. If you want a bargain, the Under Armour Launch Elite 7" is about $50 with a mesh liner and a back phone pocket, and if you hate liners, the Lululemon Pace Breaker is linerless.

Three decisions shape the right short: liner or no liner, inseam length and pockets. Liners save you from a separate layer, but some runners dislike them. Shorter inseams (3 to 5 inches) move freely, while 7 inches covers more thigh. Pockets range from a key sleeve to a zipped phone pocket.

We have not tested these shorts. Picks come from brand specs and what owners and reviewers commonly report. Prices change, so we quote full prices. For help with liner, length and pockets, use our shorts finder.

  • Liner: Brief
  • Pockets: Multi

The Session is the lightest, most breathable short in Ten Thousand's range, and it suits runs as well as conditioning work. It has a brief liner, a zip phone pocket, a zip card pocket, a perforated waistband, split hems and a shirt loop, and it comes in sizes up to XXXL. It costs $98 lined, with an unlined version at $88. The trade-offs: the price is steep, the optional trunk liner is slimmer than the one on the Interval, and the very light fabric may feel less substantial. Skip it if you want a heavier, compressive feel or a budget price. Ten Thousand offers a 30-day return policy, but it is strict: you must request within the window and mail it back within 14 days. Our Ten Thousand Session Short review covers fit. It is also tagged for HIIT and speed work in our data, so it doubles as a gym short.

Best budget pick with a liner

Under Armour Launch Elite 7" Shorts

Under Armour · Workout shorts · $50 seen $44.97 · 4/5

  • Men
  • Inseam options: 7″
  • Liner: Mesh
  • Pockets: Phone
  • Fit: Slim
Comfort4/5
Performance4/5
Durability3/5
Value5/5

The Launch Elite 7" is the sensible choice for runners who want a liner and a phone pocket without paying premium prices. It lists at about $50, with the page showing $44.97, and has lightweight stretch-woven fabric, a mesh liner, reflective details and an expandable, water-resistant back pocket that holds a phone. The compromises: UA describes the fit as close to the body, so it may feel snug, the page showed a single colorway that was out of stock and sizes were not captured. We could not read UA's return policy, although a banner says free returns. Skip it if you want a loose, roomy fit. Check the size chart and stock before you order, since availability looks limited. Even so, at this price with a liner and a phone pocket, it is the best value on the list, and our estimated rating gives it 5 out of 5 for value.

Best linerless short

Lululemon Pace Breaker Linerless Short 7"

Lululemon · Workout shorts · $68 seen $39 · 4/5

  • Sizes XS-3XL
  • Inseam options: 5″, 7″, 9″
  • Liner: None
  • Pockets: Multi
  • Fit: Athletic
  • Plus sizes
Comfort4/5
Performance5/5
Durability4/5
Value3/5

The Pace Breaker is for runners who prefer their own underwear or tights. It is light, with a back mesh yoke for ventilation, a side zip pocket and hidden phone and coin sleeves. It comes in 5, 7 and 9 inch inseams, and owners rate it 4.5 stars from about 1,800 reviews on Lululemon's page. Lululemon says all the polyester is recycled, excluding trims. It lists at $68, which is the top of the mainstream running range, though the page showed $39 as a final sale price. Skip it if you want a built-in liner, or if you do not want a final-sale item, because sale-priced shorts cannot be returned. Lululemon otherwise allows returns within 30 days. Our Pace Breaker review has more.

Best for long runs with gear

Ten Thousand Distance Short 3"

Ten Thousand · Workout shorts · $128 · 3.8/5

  • Men
  • Sizes XS-XXL
  • Inseam options: 3″
  • Liner: Brief
  • Pockets: Multi
  • Fit: Slim
  • Plus sizes
Comfort4/5
Performance5/5
Durability4/5
Value2/5

If you carry a phone, gels and keys on long runs, the Distance Short has the best storage here. It has an ultralight perforated shell, a zippered rear phone pocket, gel and key pockets, an integrated brief liner and an elasticated shirt loop. It is designed for long runs, tempo days and races. It costs $128, which is among the most expensive running shorts we found. The 3 inch inseam shows a lot of leg, and we only saw it in black. Skip it if you want longer coverage or run on a budget. The brand lists recycled materials without percentages, so we cannot quote a figure. Ten Thousand's 30-day return policy applies, with prepaid USPS labels, but the brand is strict about the 14-day mail-back rule. It is tagged for race use in our data, which tells you who it is aimed at: runners who want the least fabric and the most pockets, and who are comfortable paying for it.

Best budget running short from Gymshark

Gymshark Running 5" Shorts

Gymshark · Workout shorts · $48 · 3.5/5

  • Men
  • Sizes XS-3XL
  • Inseam options: 6″
  • Liner: Brief
  • Pockets: Zip
  • Fit: Athletic
  • Plus sizes
Comfort3/5
Performance4/5
Durability3/5
Value4/5

The Gymshark Running short offers a lot for $48: a brief liner with a soft brushed lining, a zip back pocket, reflective details, angled hems and open side splits. The fabric is 86% recycled polyester with 14% elastane. The cautions: the page showed only 20 reviews at a 3.4 average, and the listing says 5 inch while the page states a 6 inch inseam at size M, so check the size chart. Few colors were available. Skip it if you want lots of owner reviews before buying. Gymshark accepts returns within 30 days of delivery, unworn and unwashed, and items with a final discount of 60% or more are final sale. Size range extends to plus sizes in our data. At this price it is a low-risk way to try a liner-and-split-hem design, and it is tagged for long runs and everyday wear.

Best for a compression liner

Rhone Pursuit Short Lined 7"

Rhone · Workout shorts · $84 · 3.8/5

  • Men
  • Sizes S-XXL
  • Inseam options: 7″
  • Liner: Compression
  • Pockets: Multi
  • Fit: Athletic
  • Plus sizes
Comfort4/5
Performance4/5
Durability4/5
Value3/5

The Rhone Pursuit lined 7" suits runners who also hit the gym. It has a medium-compression liner with two drop-in pockets, plus a zip pocket and two hand pockets and an in-out drawcord. Rhone promotes it as Men's Health's "Best Workout Short." It costs about $84. The trade-offs: Rhone's page could not display a price when we checked, REI reviewers say it fits slightly large and a compression liner is not for everyone. Skip it if you dislike compression liners or want unlined cooling. Rhone offers free returns within 45 days in the US, which is the longest window we could confirm among these picks. Rhone's page and fabric details were hard to confirm, so double-check the specs before you buy.

Best for a short, stylish knit short

Alo Yoga 5" Traction Running Short

Alo Yoga · Workout shorts · $88 · 3.3/5

  • Men
  • Sizes S-2XL
  • Inseam options: 5″
  • Liner: None
  • Pockets: Zip
  • Fit: Athletic
  • Plus sizes
Comfort4/5
Performance4/5
Durability3/5
Value2/5

The Alo Traction is a lightweight waffle-knit short with zippered side pockets and a short 5 inch cut. Alo says the fabric keeps you cool, and it describes the fit as true to size. It costs $88 and Alo does not state a liner. The compromises: you pay a premium for a short without a stated liner, the inseam grows with size (5 inches in S to 7 inches in 2XL) and the page showed it out of stock, so it may be a carryover. Skip it if you want a built-in liner, a bargain or a guaranteed current style. Alo covers return shipping on US orders with a prepaid label and accepts unworn items within 30 days. Plus sizes are offered in our data.

How to choose running shorts

Liner or no liner. A built-in brief or mesh liner replaces underwear and reduces chafing for many runners. A compression liner, as in the Rhone Pursuit, adds support. Linerless shorts, such as the Pace Breaker and Alo Traction, let you choose your own base layer. It is a personal preference.

Inseam length. Shorter inseams, such as the Distance's 3 inches, move freely and suit racing. Mid-length 5 to 7 inch shorts cover more. Remember that some brands vary inseam by size.

Pockets. If you carry a phone, look for a zip pocket or a snug phone sleeve. The Session, Distance and Launch Elite have the most useful options. Bouncing phones are annoying, so choose a secure pocket.

Fabric and fit. Woven-light shorts feel airy. Stretch-knit shorts feel more fitted. Slim fits suit some runners, while athletic fits suit others.

Waist. A drawcord lets you adjust the waistband. An elastic waist is simpler. Several picks use both.

Returns. Check final-sale rules. Lululemon's $39 Pace Breaker price on its page was final sale, and Gymshark marks items discounted 60% or more as final sale.

Running shorts and chafing

Most runners care about two practical things: what rubs and what bounces. A liner that sits flat, flat seams and a waistband that stays put all help. A brief liner, as on the Session and Distance, keeps everything in place. A compression liner, as on the Rhone Pursuit, adds more hold and sometimes more heat. Linerless shorts depend on what you wear underneath. If you have sensitive skin, avoid wearing a new pair for a long run until you have tried them on a short one. We cannot give medical advice, and if irritation persists, ask a doctor.

Matching shorts to your runs

For short, fast runs and racing, the 3 to 5 inch options such as the Distance and Session give the most freedom. For everyday miles and mixed gym days, 7 inches like the Launch Elite or Pace Breaker covers more thigh and tends to feel less revealing. If you carry a phone, a gel and keys on long runs, prioritize pockets over price. If you only run a few times a week, a budget short such as the Gymshark Running or Launch Elite does the job.

How we picked

We have not tested these shorts. We picked them from product records built from brand pages and retailer data, looking at liner, pockets, inseam, fabric, price and owner ratings where the brand page showed them. Ratings are editorial estimates. We also flagged gaps in the data. Read our methodology. For gym-focused picks, see our best men's workout shorts.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best men's running shorts?

Our top pick is the Ten Thousand Session Short 5" for its light fabric, brief liner and zip pockets at $98. The Under Armour Launch Elite 7" is a good budget choice at about $50, and the Lululemon Pace Breaker is the pick for a linerless short. We have not tested them.

Should running shorts have a liner?

It depends on your preference. Liners offer built-in support and reduce the need for underwear, but some runners dislike them. Linerless shorts let you wear your own briefs or tights. The Session and Launch Elite have liners, while the Pace Breaker and Alo Traction do not.

What inseam is best for running shorts?

There is no single best length. Three to five inches suits racing and warm days, while seven inches gives more coverage. Our picks range from 3 to 9 inches. Check each brand's size chart, because inseam can change with size, as it does on the Alo Traction.

Can I use running shorts for the gym?

Yes. Many of these shorts work for lifting and training, particularly the Session and Rhone Pursuit, which are tagged for lifting and HIIT in our data. Some are very light, so they may feel less structured under a barbell. For lifting and general training, also see our best men's workout shorts list, which includes heavier, more structured options.

How should running shorts fit?

They should sit securely without chafing, ride up or sag when you run. Try them with a jog or high knees if you can. Some picks run large or snug, such as the Rhone Pursuit and Launch Elite, so check reviews and the return policy.
