The Best Petite Leggings

The best petite leggings for most people are the Athleta Elation: it has a dedicated Petite 25 inch inseam, sizes up to 3X and a soft ultra-high-rise fit at about $89. If you want pockets, the Athleta Salutation also comes in Petite 25. For a firm, gym-ready hold, the Fabletics PowerHold has a 7/8 length.

"Petite" means different things at different brands. Some sell a true petite inseam, some offer a short or 7/8 length, and some just have a shorter standard length. We looked for leggings where the shorter option is on the product page, and we say what each length actually is. None of the brands' pages in our data list the height range each length is built for, so check the size chart against your inseam.

We have not tested these. The list comes from brand specs and what owners and reviewers keep saying. Prices are list prices and change often.

  • Fabric feel: Buttery
  • Plus sizes · Petite · Tall

Value4/5

Athleta is the brand most set up for petite shoppers, and the Elation shows why. It comes in a Petite 25 inch inseam alongside Regular/Plus 27 and Tall 30, in sizes XXS to 3X, so petite and plus shoppers are both covered. The Powervita fabric (75% nylon, 25% Lycra) is soft and second-skin, with a three-layer waistband and a small back drop-in pocket.

At about $89 it undercuts most premium brands, and the page showed a lower sale price when we checked. The page rating was 4.66 from about 11,500 ratings.

The trade-offs: compression is moderate, so this is a yoga, Pilates, walking and everyday legging, not a heavy-lifting one, and the back pocket is small. Owners suggest checking lighter colors for coverage.

Skip it if you want firm compression. Athleta's Give-It-A-Workout guarantee gives you 30 days from delivery. See the Elation review.

Best with pockets

  • Pockets: Side

Petite shoppers rarely get pockets, and the Salutation fixes that. It comes in Petite 25, Regular 27 and Tall 30 inch inseams, with bonded-edge stash pockets and a three-layer waistband with mesh lining. The buttery Powervita fabric is nylon and Lycra, though the page lists no percentages.

The page rating was 4.81 from about 5,280 ratings, and it lists at about $89, with a lower sale price shown when we checked.

The trade-offs: the pockets are for small items, not a full-size phone. The page showed all listed sizes out of stock (XS to L), so we cannot confirm the full range, and plus availability is unverified.

Skip it if you want heavy compression or a phone-sized pocket. If you shop at Athleta, nonmembers pay a $6 return shipping fee, while exchanges are free. Read the Salutation review.

Best for a soft feel

Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant 25"

Lululemon · Leggings · $98 seen $89 · 3.5/5

  • Women
  • Sizes 0-20
  • Rise: High
  • Inseam options: 25″, 28″, 31″
  • Pockets: Waistband
  • Fabric feel: Buttery
  • Plus sizes · Petite · Tall
Comfort5/5
Performance3/5
Durability3/5
Value3/5

The Align is the soft-legging benchmark, and the version we list is the 25 inch length, which sits at a shorter inseam than most full-length leggings. Lululemon also sells 28 and 31 inch lengths. Sizes run 0 to 20. The Nulu fabric (80% nylon, 20% Lycra) is described by owners as bare-feeling, and there is a hidden waistband pocket for a card or key.

It is a low-impact pick. Compression is light, owners report pilling and snagging with friction, and light shades can show through when stretched.

It lists at about $98. The page flagged one sale colorway as final sale.

Skip it if you want firm compression for lifting or running. Lululemon gives 30 days for unworn, unwashed items with tags. Read the Align review for fit notes.

Vuori Daily Legging

Vuori · Leggings · $98 · 3.8/5

  • Women

  • Inseam options: Short, Regular (24.5), Long
  • Pockets: None
  • Fabric feel: Matte
  • Petite · Tall
Comfort5/5
Performance3/5
Durability4/5
Value3/5

Vuori is one of the few brands that sells a Short, Regular (24.5 inch) and Long inseam on the same legging. The Daily has a peach-like matte finish in BreatheInterlock (72% polyester, 28% elastane), which Vuori calls its highest-coverage legging fabric. It also has a drawcord, a no-slip waistband and cuffed ankles.

The numeric inseam of the Short length is not in our data, so check Vuori's size chart. The cuffed ankle helps if a regular length bunches.

Trade-offs: no pockets, and sizes stop at XXL. It lists at about $98.

Vuori gives 120 days to return purchases bought on its own site and stores, which suits a fit you are unsure about, though the help-center text was truncated, so confirm the details.

Skip it if you want pockets or heavy compression. See the Vuori Daily review.

Best for firm compression

Girlfriend Collective Compressive High-Rise Legging

Girlfriend Collective · Leggings · $108 · 3.8/5

  • Women
  • Sizes XXS-6XL
  • Rise: High
  • Inseam options: 23.75″, 28″, 31″
  • Pockets: None
  • Fabric feel: Compressive
  • Plus sizes · Petite · Tall
Comfort4/5
Performance4/5
Durability4/5
Value3/5

Girlfriend Collective offers a 23.75 inch inseam, the shortest of any legging in our data, plus 28 and 31 inch options. The compressive fabric is smoothing and supportive, with sizes XXS to 6XL, and the brand says it is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified recycled fabric.

That makes it a good lifting, HIIT and running candidate for petite shoppers who like a firm hold.

The trade-offs: it lists at about $108, there are no pockets, and some recent reviews criticize fit and fabric consistency. The page makes no squat-proof claim, though reviewers generally report good coverage.

Returns are 30 days from ship date, with a $7 shipping and restocking fee on refunds, so a test order costs a little. Skip it if you want pockets or a soft, loose feel. Read the full review.

Best for the gym

Fabletics Define PowerHold High-Waisted Legging

Fabletics · Leggings · $84.95 · 4/5

  • Women
  • Sizes OSFM, XXS-XXL-1X, 2X-4X
  • Rise: Ultra
  • Inseam options: 7/8, Regular, Tall
  • Pockets: None
  • Fabric feel: Compressive
  • Plus sizes · Petite · Tall
Comfort4/5
Performance4/5
Durability4/5
Value4/5

The PowerHold comes in 7/8, Regular and Tall lengths, and the 7/8 is the petite-friendly choice. It is a compressive, ultra-high-rise legging (88% polyester, 12% elastane) with a power-mesh lined waistband, four-way stretch and UPF protection.

The product copy says the waistband stays put through squats, and owners often call it squat-friendly in core colors, though Fabletics makes no opacity claim. Sizes go from XXS to 4X, so it also works if you are petite and plus size.

The trade-offs: no pockets, and the membership model adds complexity. The non-member price is about $84.95, and the page showed a much lower VIP price under a limited-time offer. The non-member return window is not stated.

Skip it if you want to avoid memberships, or if you need pockets in a petite length. See the PowerHold review.

Best for maximum hold

Alo Yoga Airlift Strength Extreme High-Waist 7/8 Legging

Alo Yoga · Leggings · $138 · 3.5/5

  • Women
  • Sizes XXS-L

  • Pockets: None
  • Fabric feel: Compressive
  • Petite
Comfort4/5
Performance4/5
Durability4/5
Value2/5

Alo says the 7/8 length suits shorter legs, and the inseam runs 24.25 to 25.25 inches depending on size. The Airlift fabric (77% polyester, 23% elastane) is the most compressive in our data, with an extra-high bonded waistband.

That makes it a strong lifting and studio pick. Owners describe it as non-sheer in dark colors, though the page makes no squat-proof or opacity claim.

It is the priciest here at about $138, and it is very snug, so some people will find it too tight. There are no pockets, and the size list ends at L. The page showed an out-of-stock notice when we checked.

Alo gives 30 days for unworn items, with a pre-paid return label on US orders. Skip it if you want a relaxed feel, pockets or a lower price. Read the Airlift Strength review.

Best for cold weather

Beyond Yoga Pacer Fleece-Backed Pocket Legging

Beyond Yoga · Leggings · $118 · 3.8/5

  • Pockets: Side
  • Fabric feel: Fleece
  • Petite
Comfort5/5

Value3/5

Beyond Yoga is the only brand here with a Capri 25 option in a warm legging, alongside Midi 28 and Full 30 inch lengths. The Pacer has a warm brushed interior (77% recycled polyester, 23% spandex), side pockets, a drawcord and a reflective hem detail.

Reviewers generally report good coverage because the fabric is thicker, and it suits cold walks and runs.

The trade-offs: it will be too warm for summer, it lists at about $118, and the sizes in our data stop at XL. The page also showed it out of stock when we checked.

Beyond Yoga lists always-free shipping and returns in the US, with a 30-day window. Skip it if you want a lightweight summer legging. See the Pacer review.

How to choose petite leggings

Know what your leggings should do at the ankle. If a standard legging bunches at your ankle, a shorter inseam fixes it. If it ends above your ankle bone, it may be a 7/8, capri or crop. Both can work, so decide on the look you want.

Compare inseam numbers, not just the label. In our data, the shorter options include Athleta's Petite 25, Lululemon's 25 and Beyond Yoga's Capri 25. Girlfriend Collective goes to 23.75, and Alo's 7/8 runs 24.25 to 25.25 inches. Vuori's Short length is not listed in inches in our data.

Think about rise. A high or ultra-high rise on a short torso can sit higher on the body than expected. If you have a shorter torso, check the rise measurement where the brand lists it. Girlfriend Collective lists 10.25 inches in size S for its pocket legging.

Choose fabric for the job. Soft fabrics (Align, Elation) suit yoga and lounging. Compressive fabrics (Alo Airlift, Girlfriend Collective, Fabletics) suit lifting and running.

Plan for returns. Because petite fit is hard to judge online, a generous window helps. Vuori gives 120 days, Beyond Yoga lists free US returns, and Alo covers return shipping on US orders. See our Lululemon vs Athleta comparison for how two big options differ.

Watch the fabric weight. Length is only half of the choice. A soft, lighter knit tends to feel less restrictive for all-day wear, while a compressive one gives more hold for training, so pick the fabric for the job and then the length.

Do not forget the waistband. A wide, layered waistband (Athleta's three-layer design, Alo's bonded band) stays flatter and rolls less. Some shoppers say the waistband matters as much as the length, so look for one that fits comfortably at your natural waist.

How we picked

We have not tested any of these leggings. We started with every legging whose product data lists a petite, short, capri or 7/8 option, then ranked on length options, size range, fabric, pockets, price and what owners commonly report. We left out leggings where a petite length is unclear. Ratings are editorial estimates.

Because brands do not publish the height range for each length in our data, we describe lengths by inseam rather than by height. Read the full process on our methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

What does petite mean for leggings?

Petite usually means a shorter inseam for shorter legs. Brands define it differently: Athleta offers Petite 25 inch, Girlfriend Collective goes down to 23.75 inches, and some brands sell a 7/8 or capri length instead. The brands in our data do not list height ranges, so go by inseam.

How do I find my inseam?

Measure from your crotch to the bone at your ankle, or to where you want the legging to end. Compare that number with the brand's inseam. If you are between lengths, a slightly longer legging will bunch at the ankle, while a shorter one can look like a 7/8.

Are 7/8 leggings the same as petite?

Not exactly. A 7/8 is a cropped length that stops above the ankle on many people, so on shorter legs it may read as full length. A petite inseam is cut shorter to fit shorter legs. Alo says its 7/8 suits shorter legs, per the page, but check the inseam number.

Where can I find petite leggings with pockets?

In our data, the Athleta Salutation (Petite 25, side stash pockets) and the Beyond Yoga Pacer (Capri 25, side pockets) are the two options. The Salutation's pockets are for small items. For a full list, see our leggings with pockets page.

Do petite leggings run small?

Petite refers to length, not width. Fit through the hip and waist depends on the brand and fabric. Girlfriend Collective says its leggings run true to size and suggests sizing down for more compression. Check each brand's size chart and return policy, and measure your hips and waist as well as your inseam.
